Meta announces big price cuts for its VR headsets

Meta, the company behind the Facebook platform, has announced a significant price cut on its VR headsets. The company revealed on Friday that it would reduce the prices of its Quest 2 and Quest Pro headsets, aiming to make VR technology more accessible to a wider audience.

The Meta Quest 2, with a storage capacity of 256GB, will now retail at $429.99, down from $499.99. Meanwhile, the higher-end Meta Quest Pro, which previously sold at $1,499.99, will now cost $999.99.

The company’s Reality Labs segment, responsible for building the company’s metaverse technologies, suffered a loss of $13.7 billion in 2022. This comes despite generating a revenue of $727 million in the fourth quarter, with $2.16 billion for the full year, down from $2.27 billion in 2021, which included sales of Quest headsets.

The Meta Quest Pro was launched in October 2022. However, the headset’s high price made it unaffordable for most consumers, and there was no clear professional use case for it. The price reduction could attract a wider audience, including professionals.

Meta is committed to making VR technology accessible and affordable to as many people as possible. “Our goal has always been to create hardware that’s affordable for as many people as possible to take advantage of all that VR has to offer,” the company stated in a release.

The price cuts will start rolling out on March 5 for the Meta Quest 2, and on the same day, US and Canadian buyers can enjoy the reduced price of the Quest Pro. For the rest of the world, the new price will come into effect on March 15.

In conclusion, the price cut on Meta’s VR headsets is an excellent opportunity for VR enthusiasts and professionals alike to get their hands on high-quality VR technology at an affordable price. The move is also likely to attract more customers, increasing Meta’s market share in the VR industry.
