The Double-Edged Sword of Deepfake: Opportunities and Risks

AI Deepfake technology

As we can see technology and AI are developing and evolving day by day. So it is fair to say that this is the Era of AI. But there is something extraordinary happening that can make your vision into reality.  Deepfake is a new technology that can make perception seem like reality. One can create audio, videos, or photos of things that a person never did. There is much more about deep fakes that we will go through briefly.

What is a Deepfake?

The term Deepfake comes from the “ deep learning algorithms” used to solve problems with large data and can be used to create fake content of real people. Deepfake uses AI to generate fake audio and videos portraying something that has no relation to reality.

A senior analyst at Graphika, Cristina Lopez said ”A Deepfake would be footage that is generated by a computer that has been trained through countless existing images.” The sentence by Cristina defined the deepfake very clearly deepfake actually works by collecting data and more accurate results will be delivered if there is more data.

How You Can Use Deepfake?

Deepfake can be used on the deep neural network that enables the face-swapping technique.  One just needs a video clip on which the user wants to use Deepfake. Then just need to collect some video clips of that person and which face you want to insert on the desired video clip. The Deepfake program scans the person from different angles and relates with the video clip person how accurately it could be able to match.

Deepfake video content

For the finishing touch, a program also has been created named Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). GAN is used to detect any flaw in the video that is generated by Deepfake to make the video accurate at that level that a Deepfake detector could not be able to detect.

Pros and Cons of Deepfake

If we talk about the positive side of the Deepfake then we will find that it surely can change the world positively. It can be useful for educational purposes as Deepfake technology could be used to create educational videos or simulations that are more engaging and interactive for students. Also useful in the movie industry to represent more realistic visual effects. One can also be used to create useful videos by which people could be influenced for any glorious purpose.

Now let’s take a look at the negative side of Deepfake. As with good positivity, it also has evil negativity. It can be used for scamming, spreading wrong messages to society,  blackmailing an innocent person, creating pornography to trap someone, and many more.

If we sum up all the facts then we can say that great things come with great danger. This technology is all dependent on how a person makes use of it and for what purpose. In this work, we thus give a comprehensive analysis of the technology, risks, and advantages. With more use of this technology, we will be able to get more information about it. It’s our responsibility to not make this technology produce any danger-related action for our world.
