What is ‘Grok’?
Grok is a conversational generative artificial intelligence chatbot that was developed to solve problems and provide information related to topics. The company claims that Grok possesses a sense of humor that no other AI chatbot possesses. But still, it is in the beta testing period. As we mentioned, Elon Musk developed Grok under an initiative to compete with other AI chatbots.
Grok was developed by X.AI to compete with GPT-4, Google’s Bard, and many other AI chatbots.
From Where is the Term “Grok” Named?
There are many rumors about the term ‘Grok’ but none are true. The reality of the term ‘Grok’ is that it is a neologism from the Robert Heinlein novel, Stranger in a Strange Land. The meaning of Grok is to “understand intuitively or by empathy, to establish rapport with.” The meaning set a high standard for this chatbot but Grok is yet not there. But who knows what could happen in the upcoming years.
How did Musk develop ‘Grok’?
As we know, Elon Musk was co-founder of Open AI with Sam Altman in 2015. However, he ended his relations with the company in 2018 because he did not agree with some decisions of the company Open AI. In 2022, Open AI launched its ChatGPT which was an incredible creation of AI. In reality, that was the year when the world came to know the power of Artificial Intelligence. Later in 2023, Open AI launched the most powerful version of GPT which is GPT-4. Then Musk decided to develop an AI chatbot that would be more powerful than GPT-4 so he took a six-month break from the work.
And finally, in September 2023, he developed the company X.AI that made the chatbot Grok. The main purpose of developing the X.AI and Grok is to understand the nature of the universe. When Musk developed the ‘Grok’ then he named it “Truth GPT” but later he named it Grok, a verb coined by Robert A. Heinlein in his 1961 science-fiction novel “Stranger in a Strange Land” to describe a form of understanding.

How is Grok a Chatbot?
Though still Grok is released only in its Beta version. But Musk has made statements that it is like other AI chatbots. According to Musk, it is capable of more open conversation with the users and can produce information with the help of a few data related to the topics.
Grok is a large language model AI that trains on data using criteria from X. Also it is running on the Grok-1 large language model (LLM) with some 33 billion parameters. But it remains behind the GPT-4 and Meta’s AI chatbot Llama which are working on 1.76 trillion and 70 billion parameters respectively. But don’t think that Grok is less capable as GPT and Llama took years to work on these trillion and billion parameters there Grok only took a few months to reach the parameters of 33 billion. This is the thing that could be the difference in the future too. But there is still much time left.

Uses data from X(formally Twitter)
Other AI chatbots gathered data from Google, Bing, and other search engines to give answers and information about the questions and topics. But Grok brings live data from X (formally Twitter) to give relevant information to the users. This can be susceptible sometimes as the spread of wrong information could be able to mislead the AI chatbot. But this problem has also a solution that X has access to off the Grok anytime. Uses of data to give information was part of the training of X.AI.
Grok is Not too Different From ChatGPT
Grok is not too different from Chat GPT as it was built on the same technology as GPT. Also, it was developed on the web since the release of ChatGPT. Where GPT trained on the data from Google, Grok trained on the data from X. Similarity is that both need data from the web to train. Both are large language model AI.
Comparison of Performance and Benchmarks Between GPT and Grok
After testing the Grok, It was found that Grok passes every benchmark. If we talk about the comparison between Grok and GPT-3.5 then Grok found it slightly ahead of GPT-3.5. But when comparing Grok with GPT-4 then GPT-4 is still ahead in performance from Grok. here is the data of comparison between GPT-4 and Grok represented below-
Features of Grok
Grok presented a new conversational ability between it and users. It has a unique output style to represent the answers. It can also give the answers to those questions that are rejected by other AI chatbots. Grok generated answers with sarcasm, dark humor, and spice that excited the users. On the HumanEval, GSM8k, MMLU, and MATH benchmarks, Grok-1 surpassed the GPT-3.5 model. Based on these results, it can be concluded that Grok AI meets acceptable performance standards as an AI chatbot.
The most notable feature is its ability to not only understand and process human language. Also has features of real-time information integration as Grok accesses the latest information from the X that balances with the passing time.
Grok gives the information worldly according to the topic. Grok is capable of multitasking as users search for information and wait on a thread while continuing with other topic searches. Grok also offers a built-in markdown editor, by which the users can download and edit the Grok’s responses. This tool, combined with branching, ensures that users can work with specific conversation branches and re-engage seamlessly.
Why do some people think that Grok is not suitable for society?
As mentioned, Grok can answer those questions that other AI chatbots reject. Due to this, the media and some citizens think that it is not appropriate for society. They take its unique style of answering as abuse. But Musk has confirmed that there is no intention to hurt anyone’s feelings, it’s just an interesting way to answer. It all depends on the mentality of person to person as to how they take the words of Grok.
How to Access Grok?
For accessing Grok AI, there are two conditions to needed that is-
- You should be on X.
- The second is that you should have a verified account on X(formally Twitter).
Maybe gradually these terms could be changed in the future as it is still in the beta version. Whenever it releases completely then surely the whole world would be able to access it without the first condition. But for now, if you want to experience the Grok beta version then you need to meet mentioned requirements to apply.
Craziness to Try out During the Release
The availability of Grok was too hard to understand. If you’re an X premium member and also reside in the U.S. (or use a VPN). Even so, there was a waiting list to try out the prototype, so no guarantee you’d get in. So you can understand how much people were excited for the chatbot. Despite having a GPT-4 powerful chatbot, they still wanted to try this.
Potential Impacts on the Industries in the Future
There is the sheer potential for Grok to impact many industries. In business, it could streamline data analysis and decision-making processes, leading to more efficient and evolving operations. Grok AI may lead to more intelligent and user-friendly personal assistants in the real world that could be able to improve users’ experience. Grok AI’s more general uses may transform environmental research, healthcare, and the creation of driverless cars. The advancements of Grok AI are not just limited to the technology world but it also integrates AI with human intelligence.

Limitations of Grok AI
There are many goods of the Grok that we have already mentioned in the features and much more. But there are also some limitations of Grok AI that you should know.
- Rushed development and limited training of Grok as the company only trained Grok for two months with 33 billion parameters. This is nothing in the front in the comparison of this era as it seems to be rushed in the launch of the Grok. GPT-4 took 6 months for the training and can see that it is still more powerful than Grok.
- As parameters could be another x-factor for the Grok. The amount of parameters tells the amount of information stored by the AI. Grok’s 33 billion parameters are quite fascinating but this is not too much in comparison to other AI chatbot’s parameters. Many AI chatbots have billions and trillions of parameters.
- Context handling is also a worry for Grok. According to xAI, Grok understands 8192 tokens of context, but GPT-4 juggles a whopping 32,000, and Claude takes it even further with up to 100,000 tokens.
- Cost is also a crucial factor as it is more costly than other chatbot AI. It doesn’t seem right to set a high price standard during the testing period that could affect the market in the future for the company.
