SISTRIX vs Ahrefs: Visibility, Research and Reporting

SISTRIX vs Ahrefs compared on listed prices, projects, seats, data history and AI tracking, with plan facts checked on Oct 16, 2026.

Illustration of a laptop with visibility charts and a balance scale comparing SISTRIX and Ahrefs

You run a site in Europe and someone asks why a competitor keeps outranking you. Or you run a content team in the US and someone asks which keywords are actually winnable. The first question is SISTRIX territory. The second is Ahrefs.

Both tools show up on every serious SEO shortlist, both have been around for well over a decade, and both will happily take your money, but they answer different questions.

I have compared them feature by feature against the current plan pages, and the honest answer is that most buyers should not be choosing between them at all: they should be choosing which of two different jobs they need done.

Every price and limit below comes from the SISTRIX and Ahrefs pricing pages as listed on Oct 16, 2026.

The 60-second verdict. SISTRIX is a visibility measurement system built around its Visibility Index, strongest in German-speaking and European markets, priced in euros from €119 per month, cancelable monthly.

Ahrefs is a research platform built around one of the largest live backlink and keyword databases on the web, priced in dollars from $129 per month with a cheaper $29 Starter tier and a genuinely useful free tier for your own site. If your work is “prove how visible we are versus competitors,” pick SISTRIX.

If your work is “find the keywords, links and content gaps that move rankings,” pick Ahrefs. For the wider field, our SEO strategies guide covers how tools like these fit into a growth plan.

What they cost, side by side

Most comparisons bury pricing at the bottom. It belongs first here, because the two companies bill so differently. As in our Airtable vs monday.com comparison, the billing model shapes everything else about the decision. SISTRIX sells four euro-priced packages that you can cancel monthly.

Ahrefs sells three main dollar-priced tiers with an annual discount of up to 17%, plus a cheap Starter plan, a free tier and an Enterprise tier at $1,499 per month that requires an annual commitment.

What you pay for SISTRIX (EUR, plus taxes, cancelable monthly) Ahrefs (USD)
Entry plan Start at €119 per month Lite at $129 per month, or $108 per month billed annually ($1,290 per year)
Mid plan Plus at €239 per month, the most popular package Standard at $249 per month, or $208 per month billed annually ($2,490 per year)
Upper plan Professional at €419 per month Advanced at $449 per month, or $374 per month billed annually ($4,490 per year)
Top tier Premium at €799 per month, plus custom Enterprise Enterprise at $1,499 per month, annual commitment required
Cheapest way in 14-day free trial, no cancellation needed Ahrefs Free for your own site, or the $29 per month Starter plan
Extra users €24.90 per user per month from Plus up $40 to $100 per user per month depending on plan

Two things stand out when you read the small print. First, SISTRIX’s monthly cancellation is real flexibility: you can run a two-month visibility audit project and walk away.

It is the same real-cost math we walked through in Moz Local vs BrightLocal: headline prices lie until you multiply by your real headcount and project count.

Ahrefs only gets cheap when you commit annually, and there is no full-platform free trial, so testing Ahrefs properly means either the free tier, which covers only your own verified site, or the $29 Starter plan. Second, the seat math goes opposite ways.

SISTRIX includes 3 users on Plus, 6 on Professional and 12 on Premium before charging €24.90 per extra seat. Ahrefs includes exactly one user on Lite, Standard and Advanced, then charges $40, $60 or $80 per extra seat depending on the plan.

A five-person team on Ahrefs Standard pays $249 plus four seats at $60, so $489 per month on monthly billing. The same team on SISTRIX Professional pays €419 and still has a spare seat. We have seen the same per-seat trap in other tools, for example in our Calendly pricing breakdown.

Ahrefs pricing page showing Lite at $108, Standard at $208 and Advanced at $374 per month billed annually

Both catalogs extend past the headline plans. SISTRIX meters usage and sells top-ups: extra projects from €5.99 to €9.90 each, extra SERP updates from €0.02 to €0.04 each, and extra API credits at €75 per 10,000 per week.

Ahrefs sells capability add-ons instead: a Content Kit from $99 per month, Report Builder at $99 per month, Project Boost tiers at $20 or $200 per project per month, and Brand Radar for AI visibility from $199 per month with prompt packages at $50, $100 and $250.

Support differs too: SISTRIX is chat on the lower packages and adds phone and premium support in English from Professional, while Ahrefs relies on chat and email across plans. If your team depends on fast vendor answers, weigh that the way you would when choosing help desk software for your own support team.

The core difference: a score versus a database

SISTRIX is built around one number: the Visibility Index. It tracks a fixed, huge keyword set across countries and turns rankings into a single score per domain, so you can watch your site’s visibility rise and fall over years and compare it directly against any competitor.

The methodology is public, the history goes back over 11 years on the Professional and Premium packages, and because the keyword set is fixed, the score is stable enough to put in a client report or a board deck.

When someone in Germany says a domain “lost visibility” after a Google update, they are almost always quoting SISTRIX.

Ahrefs is built around a database instead of a score. It runs what it calls the second-most active crawler on the web and lets you query it: every keyword a domain ranks for, every backlink it has, every page a competitor published.

Site Explorer answers “show me everything about this domain,” Keywords Explorer answers “show me every angle on this topic,” and the depth per query is the selling point.

The trade-off is that Ahrefs numbers are estimates from its own crawl and clickstream models, so absolute traffic figures need sanity-checking against your own Google Analytics 4 data, while the Visibility Index’s fixed methodology makes SISTRIX the more quotable benchmark.

Each tool has also exported its private metric into industry shorthand. Ahrefs’ Domain Rating and Keyword Difficulty get quoted in pitches worldwide, and SISTRIX’s Visibility Index plays the same role in Europe. Treat both as compasses rather than rulers.

Neither metric fixes a slow or badly structured site; that work lives in development and framework choices, the territory of our Next.js for SEO tutorial, long before a monitoring tool enters the picture.

What only SISTRIX does

A quotable visibility benchmark, especially for Europe. The Visibility Index covers many country indexes, and SISTRIX’s roots in the DACH market mean its German, Austrian and Swiss data is the reference standard there. If your clients or competitors operate in Europe, the score is the shared language.

Broader technical SEO work pairs well with it, since the index shows you whether fixes actually moved the needle.

Marketplace and influencer modules. Every SISTRIX package, including the €119 Start plan, includes Amazon analysis: product research, brand and retailer analysis and a category check. There is also a long-standing influencer discovery database for Instagram, TikTok and YouTube. Ahrefs does not touch either market. For ecommerce brands splitting effort between Google and Amazon, that bundling matters.

AI visibility included in every package. SISTRIX’s AI products, the AI Check for how your brand appears in chatbot answers and prompt tracking with monthly quotas, are currently included in all packages at no extra cost while in beta.

Ahrefs gates its equivalent, Brand Radar, from $199 per month on top of your plan, with only 5 to 20 tracked AI prompts included in the main tiers. If measuring presence in AI answers is a 2026 priority, SISTRIX is dramatically cheaper for it right now.

Reporting built for client work. Reports, dashboards and lists scale from 3 on Start to 500 on Premium, with white-label reports from Professional up, scheduled alerts on every package, and a direct connection to Google Search Console and Analytics.

If you like your reporting automated end to end, it is worth comparing with the best automation tools we have tested for stitching data between systems.

Monthly cancellation and training. Every SISTRIX package cancels monthly, and paid plans include seminar seats, online and in person, from 1 attendee per year on Start up to 12 on Premium. It reads like a company that expects to keep you with service rather than lock-in.

What only Ahrefs does

Deep keyword and topic research. Keywords Explorer generates thousands of ideas per seed with difficulty scores, traffic potential, clustering and SERP history. The Lite plan gives you the full research workflow; what scales with price is volume and history.

For content-led growth, this is the best research surface in the category, and it is where our on-page SEO techniques guide sends readers to find winnable topics.

Backlink analysis at scale. Ahrefs built its name on link data, and Site Explorer’s backlink index, broken-link reports, outgoing link analysis and batch analysis remain the reference for link work. SISTRIX has a backlink index too, but nobody buys SISTRIX for links.

Site auditing included, even for free. Ahrefs’ Site Audit crawls for 170+ issue types, from broken links to hreflang mistakes, and the always-on audit option keeps recrawling between scheduled runs. Verified sites get it free, which makes it the easiest technical audit to recommend to a site owner with no budget.

Teams working through the findings should pair it with our voice search optimization guide if they want the content side ready for spoken and AI queries too.

A real low-cost entry path. Ahrefs Free gives you Site Audit and limited Site Explorer data on sites you verify, genuinely useful for a small site owner. The $29 Starter plan adds competitive research at hobby prices. SISTRIX’s cheapest real use is €119 after the 14-day trial.

If budget is the constraint, Ahrefs is the only option under $100, and if even that is too much, our guide on whether SEO services are worth it for small businesses helps you decide what to spend at all.

Rank tracking volume. Ahrefs tracks 750 keywords on Lite, 2,000 on Standard and 5,000 on Advanced, updated weekly by default. SISTRIX works in SERP-update credits: 2,500 per month on Start, 15,000 on Plus, 40,000 on Professional, which convert differently depending on how often you refresh.

For heavy daily tracking across many keywords, dedicated tools win anyway; see our AccuRanker vs Ahrefs comparison for that use case.

Where both tools fall short

SISTRIX’s weakness is reach. Outside its core European countries the keyword and visibility data thins out, its backlink index is much smaller than Ahrefs’, and parts of the documentation and community still assume you read German. If your market is the US, SISTRIX will rarely be the first tool to buy.

Ahrefs’ weakness is the billing experience. The per-user credit system on Lite feels tight, the cheapest useful plan for teams jumps quickly past $250 per month once seats are added, there is no monthly-cancelable cheap tier for the full platform, and its traffic estimates are modeled numbers that can drift far from reality on smaller sites unless you check them against your own analytics data.

The company’s pace of change is another small tax: plans, credit rules and feature names shift often enough that last year’s tutorial screenshots confuse new users. Neither tool replaces judgment; both replace guesswork with a different flavor of approximation.

Try this before you buy

Two evenings, no annual commitment:

  1. Start the SISTRIX 14-day trial and pull the Visibility Index history for your domain and your three closest competitors. Note how far back the data goes on your package and whether the trend lines answer the questions your boss actually asks.
  2. Verify your site in Ahrefs Free and run Site Audit plus the limited Site Explorer. If you need competitor data, add one month of the $29 Starter plan and research one real topic cluster in Keywords Explorer.
  3. Compare what each tool told you about the same competitor. SISTRIX will give you the cleaner story. Ahrefs will give you more things to do next. Write down the three numbers from each tool that would actually change a decision for you, and ignore the rest of the feature list.
  4. Buy the one whose output you actually used in a decision, and measure the results through your own analytics stack or a reporting layer like the ones in our Databox alternatives roundup.

Pick your tool

Pick SISTRIX if… Pick Ahrefs if…
Your market is Germany, Austria, Switzerland or elsewhere in Europe, and the Visibility Index is the number your clients and competitors already quote Your work is global or US-centric and you need keyword, content and backlink research depth more than a benchmark score
You need monthly cancellation, included seats and training for a team You are a solo SEO or small team that can start on the free tier or $29 Starter and scale later
You sell on Amazon or work with influencers and want that data in the same subscription Link building and competitor content analysis drive your strategy
AI visibility tracking at no extra cost matters to your 2026 reporting You want API and MCP access on every paid plan to pipe data into your own systems
You need 11 years of historical visibility data for long-range analysis (Professional and Premium) You need unlimited historical data and enterprise controls like SSO (Enterprise)

If you run an agency weighing these against the rest of the market, the operational side matters as much as the data: client communication, retainers and renewals usually live in tools like the easy CRM platforms for small sales teams we reviewed, while the SEO suite supplies the numbers.

The same tool questions apply to the other suites we have tested: BrightEdge vs Ahrefs covers the enterprise end, and our Moz Local vs BrightLocal guide covers the local SEO corner. The JustCreateApp directory lists every option with pricing notes.

One more tiebreaker worth seeing with your own eyes is AI visibility, where the two products look completely different: SISTRIX’s AI view is an extension of its index logic, while Ahrefs’ Brand Radar tracks your brand across AI answers, YouTube and Reddit with an AI share-of-voice metric.

The bottom line

If you take one thing from this guide, take the distinction between measuring and researching. SISTRIX’s own description of the Visibility Index as the gold standard for measuring SEO success since 2008 is marketing language, but it is marketing language your European clients will recognize on sight.

SISTRIX Visibility Index definition page with a live visibility index widget

SISTRIX and Ahrefs are both excellent, and they are not really substitutes. SISTRIX is the better measurement and reporting instrument, with European depth, Amazon and influencer data, monthly cancellation and AI visibility bundled in. Ahrefs is the better research engine, with the deeper keyword and link database, a free tier and a $29 on-ramp.

European agencies and in-house teams reporting on visibility should start with SISTRIX. Content and link-driven teams anywhere should start with Ahrefs. Frequently asked questions

Is SISTRIX cheaper than Ahrefs?

The entry plans are close: €119 per month for SISTRIX Start versus $129 per month for Ahrefs Lite. SISTRIX includes more seats and monthly cancellation, which often makes it cheaper for teams. Ahrefs is cheaper for solo users because of the free tier and the $29 Starter plan.

At the top end SISTRIX Premium costs €799 per month while Ahrefs Enterprise starts at $1,499 per month with an annual commitment.

Does SISTRIX have a free trial?

Yes. SISTRIX offers a 14-day free trial with no cancellation needed on its packages. Ahrefs does not offer a full-platform trial; it provides a free tier for sites you verify and a $29 per month Starter plan instead.

What does SISTRIX charge for extra users?

From the Plus package up, additional user accounts cost €24.90 per user per month. Start includes 1 user, Plus 3, Professional 6 and Premium 12. Ahrefs includes 1 user on its main plans and charges $40 to $100 per extra user per month depending on the tier. Enterprise starts from 3 included users.

Which tool has better historical data?

Which is better for agencies?

It depends on the client base. Agencies with European clients benefit from SISTRIX’s quotable Visibility Index, white-label reports from Professional up, and included seats. Both tools show up constantly in the stacks of the top digital marketing companies we track. Many agencies run both: SISTRIX for reporting and client-facing visibility trends, Ahrefs for the research that feeds the actual work. If that is you, the combined cost is usually still less than one junior hire.
